USED Gibson Custom Historic 1952 J-185

Summer of '64, Skip James walked onto the Newport Folk Festival stage carrying a Gibson J-185. Thirty years removed from his last recording, half-convinced nobody remembered him, he played "Devil Got My Woman" while Son House, Mississippi John Hurt, and Howlin' Wolf watched from the wings. Jim Marshall's photo from that set is one of the defining images of the entire blues revival. Nobody hands you that kind of moment on a whim, and Gibson never built enough of these to hand out easily.

Between 1951 and 1959, total production landed at 918 — 648 sunburst, 270 natural. Then Gibson dropped the model, and the ones already out in the world quietly became some of the most sought-after flat-tops the company ever made: tighter and more focused than an SJ-200, warmer than a J-45, built for players chasing clarity without sacrificing low-end weight.

That reputation outlived the original run by decades. Billie Joe Armstrong switched to a J-185 for "Good Riddance" on the Hella Mega Tour. Jeff Tweedy owns one he reportedly won't fully trust until the strings go dead. Richard Ashcroft plays a natural J-185 through entire sets, and Eric Clapton keeps one in his personal collection just for how it looks in a room.

None of these guys need a guitar handed to them — they went and found this one specifically.

Gibson's Custom Shop built this copy as a tribute to that original run: hand-assembled in Bozeman, Montana in April 2023, with a thermally aged Sitka spruce top designed to fast-forward the aging that made the '50s originals sound the way they do. Flame maple back and sides, mahogany neck cut to the vintage V-profile, same recipe Gibson used the first time around. The factory did its part on the aging. The player who owned this one did the rest — real hours, real wear; this is no case-queen.

On a guitar built specifically to sound like it's already lived a life, that's not a flaw. That's the whole point.

This is a USED instrument in GOOD condition.
